LEAVING THE TREES is a novel that predicts and examines the coming cyber war among nations. It describes the possible meltdown of our global society as we know it. Just as we see in the press today, it has at its root cause, the political gridlock we are now in that finally causes everything to spin out of control. Civilization collapses. Survivors, led by a military leader in the mountains of Montana, must try to survive in a homestead they create. It is initially set in Washington D.C. with political leaders who do not deal effectively with a cyberattack on our global financial systems. As things begin to unravel, and society loses the ability to cope, things just stop working and there is a global meltdown of everything. At this point the novel sharply transitions to the future and the aftermath of this meltdown. The last two thirds of the book portrays how, well off of the grid with no food or electricity, a small community in Montana must pick up the pieces and learn how to survive with what they have left and how they must live. Their battle for survival centers on safe food sources and the fight for it. It is a suspense novel about trust, courage, betrayal and revenge that is filled with many twists, and turns. It received an outstanding review in the Prepper Journal. “Leaving The Trees is a great story and I can’t wait for the next one.” --March 31, 2014. "I just finished the book - all I can say is that it is a WOW! I can't wait until the sequel is out." May 27, 2014 --Backdoor Survival Book Review. Featured in November 2014 on Survivor Jane. Featured in May 2015 on the Preparedness Radio Network.

Leaving The Trees Leaving The Trees Journey Book 1 eBook Richard Broome

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. It's extremely short, it should never have been split into 3 separate books. Each chapter is about 15 pages long. The first half of the book is spent leading up to the global melt-down but it's never explained exactly how it went down. We only see one character in the second part of the book that we were introduced to pre-meltdown. We don't know why the Chinese plotted the downfall of Western Civilization. The writing style is juvenile and characters under developed. Is the author normally a self help ghost writer? Too bad, the premise is decent and I'd like to know what happens to the people after the fall but not enough to buy another book in this series.

Leaving The Trees Leaving The Trees Journey Book 1 eBook Richard Broome Reviews

The book should have been a good read, but I just couldn't get past the string of dumb mistakes made by the characters. Armed strangers im the camp? Walking into a building without scouting or clearing? The author needs to attend a survival or tactical seminar.
This story is not about a military apocalypse. However, In the wake of recent disputes over a military strike on Syria and the likely retaliatory consequences, it strikes a nerve.
Beginning with an inside peek at the narcissistic dysfunction in Washington, it has interesting character development. Initially, I thought this might be a "guy's book" but the beginning pulled me right into the detailed personas of very realistic and identifiable female characters.
When the story segued abruptly to the future, it took me by surprise.
This is a fairly quick read. The ending leaves open the door to be continued.....
Trust is a topic often avoided in our current American dialog. Richard Broome explores this in an exciting, fast moving and twist-filled novel. We had "Reds", we had all the "Escape From" stories; yet now we have an insight into a true "what- if"! I cannot wait to read his next novel - a great read, a great story and in its own way a great truth!
Leaving the Trees starts off very detailed and taught me a few things I didn't know. For some unknown reason though the novel jumps way ahead and moves back and forth with no real main characters or description provided where the reader has questions. Overall it read like the outline for a full novel or a short story you would find on an internet forum. While an interesting premise the overall read was unsatisfying.
The story line sounded interesting. In Part 1, I learned a bit about the financial world and began wondering "could this happen?" Then in Part 2, I was taken aback at the leap to the future, but soon got caught up in the characters, again wondering "could this happen?" I was surprised at one event and gasped aloud. I now am hoping that there is another book to elaborate on what happened to these Montana folks. This was a thought provoking first novel.
The novel begins in the near future, when a foreign adversary launches devastating cyber attacks against the Western world's critical infrastructures. Government and industry are hapless, and anarchy quickly descends.

In the second part of the novel, a group of refugees survives in a fortified camp on the edge of the Montana wilderness, growing crops and anxiously watching the horizon for marauders. Their leader is Roberta, a disciplined Afghan War veteran, with support from Scott, her teenage son, and Erin, a former high-rolling stockbroker. One day, a stranger approaches ... and their precarious lives take a wicked turn.

In the third part, the group is reduced to slaving under a manipulative tyrant - until one of them escapes, discovers the world that once was, and returns to set the others free.

This is a fast moving page-turner, with realistic characters and exciting twists and turns. A key theme throughout the book is the importance of trust - and how trusting your instincts may shock you.

A recommended read. Enjoy it, and watch for the sequel.
Loved the first two installments and can't wait for the 'rest of the story.' The editor must have hurried through the book and
did a poor job of correcting minor spelling errors. Perhaps a second and third reading of the book by the editor would solve
this problem. Well done Richard. Keep up the good work.
